Former Mass. Mail Carrier Found Guilty of Stealing over 9,000 Pieces of Mail

A former Roslindale mail carrier was sentenced Wednesday for embezzling thousands of pieces of mail.

Megan Hawes, 29, of Roslindale was found guilty of stealing over 9,700 pieces of mail between March 2017 and May 2018. She searched through mail for cash and gift cards and confiscated them for herself instead of delivering them.

Hawes was discovered on May 10, 2018 when a car in an impounded lot in Weymouth was found to have multitudes of undelivered and opened mail inside. The United States Postal Service concluded that Hawes had used the car when delivering mail. She was questioned later that day and admitted to stealing and opening the mail.

The former postal service worker pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail matter in December 2018. She was sentenced in a federal court in Boston to two years of supervised release and 80 hours of community service.
