Investigation Underway After Gloucester House Destroyed in Overnight Fire

Officials are investigating the cause of an overnight house fire in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Firefighters were called to the home on Essex Street just after midnight Thursday where the home was engulfed in flames.

Authorities said the two residents who lived there were able to make it out of the house safely, but their two cats did not.

The home was deemed a total loss.

"By the time we were set up and working it was fully involved and had a pretty good advance on everybody," Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith said.

After hotspots were doused, an excavator arrived at the scene at about 8 a.m. to take down what was left of the home.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
