Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has pocket vetoed a bill that would ban flame retardant chemicals from being used in a variety of household products.
In a letter sent to lawmakers on Friday, the Republican governor said while he supports the legislation's goal of eliminating the toxic chemicals, he cannot sign the measure in its present form.
Lawmakers sent the bill to Baker on Jan. 2, the final day of the previous legislative session. Since a new session is underway, the veto cannot be overridden.
Baker said some aspects of the bill conflict with federal requirements and argued the short time frame given for implementing the proposed new standards could cause disruptions for consumers.
Advocates say the chemicals used by some manufacturers in furniture and children's products aren't necessary to meet current flammability standards.
