Mild air, on a southerly wind, will accompany showers crossing New England Tuesday — but we're keeping an eye on possible snow for swaths of the region later this week.
There will be two separate focal points to the rain showers Tuesday. One is across northern New England, where showers slowly drift from west to east over the course of the day.
The other is in eastern Massachusetts, eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island, where the steadiest and heaviest rain will fall from midday through the late afternoon.
By evening, most of the rain will break apart fairly quickly, though some lingering scattered showers will be found in the North Country overnight. Though skies will clear during the night, fog will develop in pockets from leftover moisture of the earlier showers.
Wednesday brings a shot of dry and cool fall air that promises sunshine but also leaves high temperatures capped either side of 50 degrees.
Meanwhile, the fast-moving jet stream winds will continue to fire a parade of energetic disturbances across the northern tier of the U.S. The most meaningful of these disturbances — located over western Canada as of this writing — will become our biggest player of the week by Thursday night into Friday morning.

Ahead of the approaching disturbance, Thursday will bring a fairly quiet day of thickening clouds during the afternoon followed by evening rain showers.
As night falls, rain will mix with, and turn to, snow in northern New England, where snow will fall through the night and accumulate three to six inches through Friday morning. This will provide a first natural base for ski areas that already have fired up snow guns this year.
Mostly rain is expected in the southern half of New England, though the cold air from the north will surge southward in the predawn hours Friday, producing some snow showers and flurries even in parts of southern New England.

The cold air will launch a winter preview across the region with temperatures Friday pegged at, or below, 40 degrees, with wind chill values closer to 20 degrees or in the teens!
Saturday will probably be equally cold, but the wind will be light, which makes it the pick of the weekend for raking and picking up leaves around the yard, as the breeze is expected to pick back up Sunday.
