Hazmat Situation Sparked by Downed Transformer at Cape Cod Pond

The hazmat situation comes a day after two tornadoes touched down on Cape Cod.

Material from a downed transformer spilled into a Cape Cod pond Wednesday, prompting a hazardous materials incident.

Police declared a hazmat incident at Little Mill Pond in Chatham, Massachusetts, Wednesday afternoon.

Swimming and shell-fishing has been prohibited at Little Mill Pond and the portion of Mill Pond north of the Bridge Street overpass, police said. Testing will be conducted before those activities are allowed to resume.

Environmental crews were working to clean up the material.
