With the thermometer ticking up to 90° at Logan Airport, it’s officially a “heat wave” for Boston (not that we needed the thermometer at Boston Logan Airport to tell us that). A heat wave is declared when it’s three consecutive days (or more) with high temperatures at 90 or above. Today marked the third day in a row of 90° highs and we also tied the record high for this date, that set back to 1986.
If you’re not a big fan of this heat wave, you’re in luck as we transition back into spring-mode. A cold front is sliding in from the northwest, already ushering in the cool down for northern New England as the temperature difference between Burlington, VT and Providence, RI was nearly 30° by noon as temperatures ranged from the mid-50s north to mid 80s south. This evening, a few showers and thunderstorms are possible along the southern coastline as the cold air mass clashes with the record-breaking heat, so be weather aware if you’re going to be outdoors in the early evening hours. Otherwise, clouds and spotty showers will slide out, which will allow temperatures to drop. Temperatures will likely take a dive after sunset with overnight lows expected to dip into the 50s south, 40s north.
We’re tracking a much more seasonable and sun-filled weekend compared to last weekend. Highs this weekend will be into the 60s to near 70 south- great for any of your outdoor plans. The next chance for showers returns as early as Monday morning, spreading from west to east through the afternoon. We dry out by Tuesday and Wednesday before more showers & a few thunderstorms slide in for Thursday.
