Hillary Clinton Opens Up at Boston Stop on Book Tour

Hillary Clinton’s international book tour hit Boston Tuesday night.

“I’ve often felt like I had to be careful in public, to keep my guard up,” Clinton told the crowd at the Boston Opera House. “Well those days are over.”

Clinton opened up about the 2016 presidential election, calling it the first reality TV campaign.

“My opponent was the first reality TV candidate and I was the candidate of reality,” said Clinton. “And you know people were watching it like they were watching a train wreck.”

Clinton says it was a painful process to write her book “What Happened” in the wake of her defeat.

“One of the most common questions I’ve been asked is, 'how did you even get out of bed after the election,'” said Clinton. “And I’ll admit there were times when I was tempted to just pull the covers over my head.”

She says she relied on family and friends, mystery novels, her dogs, walks in the woods, and she turned to other things, as well.

“Did some yoga, practiced something called alternate nostril breathing, which I actually describe in the book,” said Clinton. “And yes I had my fair share of chardonnay.”

As for her decades in politics, Clinton says she felt people generally liked her in supporting roles such as first lady.

“But the minute a woman, or in this case me, stands up and says 'OK now I’d like a chance to lead,' everything starts to shift,” Clinton said.

The former Secretary of State said while it is deeply rewarding, it can also be infuriating to be a woman in politics.

“It almost doesn’t matter what you wear or what your hair looks like or your speaking voice sounds like, you’re going to be criticized,” Clinton said.

And she touched on current events like the increase in racism nationwide.

“A lot of the resurgence of racism and white supremacy and the like," Clinton said, "was a delayed reaction to the election and re-election of Barack Obama.”
