Woman Accused of Stealing Item From Sgt. Gannon Fundraiser

A Hyannis, Massachusetts woman is facing charges for allegedly stealing an item from a fundraiser held on behalf of the late Yarmouth K-9 Sgt. Sean Gannon.

Maureen Wiggin, 56, is due in court on Monday for larceny of property under $1,200.

Barnstable Police responded to a call at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday at the Cape Codder Resort in Hyannis, where the fundraiser, complete with raffles and a live auction, was being held. Witnesses told officers that one of the items from the silent auction had gone missing: a decorative blue box containing golf balls, baseball hats and various shirts.

Upon viewing a security video, police determined that a woman had taken the box from a table and left the venue. This led authorities to Wiggin's home, where the item was recovered in the trunk of her car after Wiggin was initially uncooperative with authorities.

Tickets were $25 to the event; there's no record of Wiggin having purchased one. The stolen item was ultimately returned to its rightful winner.

Gannon, 32, was killed in the line of duty while executing a search warrant in Barnstable in April. The man accused of killing him, 29-year-old Thomas Latanowich, is being held without bail on murder charges.
