Investigators Tear Through Cape Cod Home Where Yarmouth Police Officer Was Shot to Death

Investigators spent much of Friday back at the Cape Cod home where Thursday's deadly shooting death of Yarmouth Police Officer Sean Gannon took place.

Teams of officers were trying to collect as much evidence as possible from the home on Blueberry Lane in Barnstable, Massachusetts, with firefighters even tearing up the roof.

Officer Gannon and two other officers were looking for 29-year-old Thomas Latanowich on Thursday afternoon, trying to serve him with an arrest warrant.

During a sweep of the house, Gannon was shot in the attic.

"The policeman came and said we had to leave," said next-door neighbor Jackie Machado. "It's a very tense situation ... they told us to 'go, go, go.'"

Latanowich was arraigned Friday on a murder charge and one count of mistreating a police dog. Officer Gannon's K9 Nero was shot in the incident.

"You can't believe that something like this just happens in your own backyard," said Joe Corona, who lives across the street from where the shooting took place.

According to the Massachusetts Probation Service, a warrant was issued for Latanowich's arrest days ago after he wasn't home for a probation visit and failed to appear for a drug test.

Latanowich, who has an extensive criminal record, is being held without bail.

Nero underwent emergency surgery and it's hoped he will make a full recovery.
