Is MBTA Ready for Winter?

The MBTA and commuter rail operator Keolis are learning from winters past. Since the extremely heavy snowfall of 2015, they have invested more than $100 million to make sure trains and buses stay in service in the colder months.

Thousands of commuters dealt with late or canceled trains during two winters ago. But the agencies have purchased 54 new pieces of equipment, including a drone and a track utility vehicle equipped with a plow.

This year, trains will run continuously to prevent snow from accumulating on the tracks.

Launching this season is the "severe weather" service advisory system. It will color code weather events and schedule changes to prevent leaving commuters out in the cold.

The MBTA has also implemented numerous operational and personnel changes, including creating a weather desk and establishing a snow manager.
