James Beard Award Winner Karen Akunowicz (Myers + Chang) to Open Her Own Restaurant

by Marc Hurwitz

A local chef who is a recent James Beard award winner is going to be opening her very own restaurant.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Karen Akunowicz of Myers + Chang in Boston's South End is leaving the Washington Street dining spot June 30 to open a new restaurant, with the Executive Chef and partner of Joanne Chang and Christopher Myers' eatery saying that "The timing just coincided" with her receiving Best Chef: Northeast last month and that "This is a culmination, for me, of 21 years in the industry." Neither a location nor a name has been mentioned as of yet, as Akunowicz is in the middle of finalizing where the restaurant will be as well as its concept, according to the article.

Akunowicz, who has worked at such places as Ten Tables, the now-closed Via Matta, and Oleana along with Myers + Chang, is working with her spouse (LJ) along with silent investors on the opening of the upcoming restaurant, which may debut sometime this fall.
