An elderly Auburn, Maine man with a long history of assaulting women has been charged with stabbing a mother to death in front of her children for the second time.

Albert Flick, 76, made his first court appearance Tuesday for the death of Kimberly Dobbie, 48, of Lewiston. Police say Flick killed her outside of a laundromat Sunday in front of her 11-year-old twin sons. Friends say Flick had been "obsessed" with Dobbie and stalking her.

A judge ordered Flick held without bail. He did not have to enter a plea Tuesday. Flick’s attorney said he may request a bail hearing at a later date.

Several people who knew Dobbie attended Flick’s initial court appearance. “She needs people that can be her voice,” said friend Laurie Moreau. She felt Dobbie’s death could have been prevented. “[Flick] should have never been allowed out on the streets.”

Flick has served time for an eerily similar crime. In 1979, he stabbed his wife Sandra Flick to death in front of her daughter. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison but was released early due to good behavior. Since his release, he has had several arrests for charges such as criminal threatening and assault with a knife.

In 2010, he pleaded guilty to stabbing another woman. Prosecutors asked the judge to give Flick a longer sentence, warning that his violent tendencies did not seem to be slowing down.

Judge Robert Crowley denied that request, writing “At some point, Mr. Flick is going to age out of his capacity to engage in this conduct, and incarcerating him beyond the time that he ages out doesn’t seem to me to make good sense from a criminological or fiscal perspective."

In 2016, Flick was out of prison again. Two years later, he is charged with his second murder.

"I was devastated, I was shocked," said friend Jim Lipps.

He said in the weeks leading up to the murder, Dobbie told him someone had been "bothering" her.

"I said please go to the police because he's a danger," Lipps said.
