A man was denied bail in the stabbing death of another man outside an apartment complex in Massachusetts.
Nathan Silva, 23, of New Bedford, is charged with murder in the death of Jorge Vieira, 25, who was found stabbed in Fall River on Saturday morning. Jessica Brophy, 27, is charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder.
Silva was ordered held without bail, and Brophy was released to home confinement on Monday.
Brophy told investigators that Silva stayed at her home Friday night and used her phone to exchange threatening messages with Vieira into the morning, according to a police report. She said Silva told Vieira to come to her apartment complex, and the two men fought in the parking lot. Silva came into the apartment covered in blood and asked her to pick up a knife handle outside, according to her account.
Vieira called 911 and told dispatchers that he had been stabbed. He died at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
Silva's lawyer, Frank Camera, raised the possibility that his client might have been acting in self-defense.
Brophy's lawyer, James Hanley, said Brophy was not involved in the stabbing and "has been acting consistent with someone who is the sole caretaker of two children'' who were at home at the time the fatal stabbing happened outside.
