Man Held at Wyatt Detention Facility in Rhode Island Dies, Says Spokesperson

Authorities said inmate Gilbert Delestre had previously been diagnosed with and treated for numerous chronic health conditions and was being monitored by facility medical staff

A man being held for the U.S. Marshals Service at the quasi-public detention center in Rhode Island has died.

A spokesman for the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls says inmate Gilbert Delestre was taken from the facility to the hospital last Thursday and died Sunday.

Delestre had previously been diagnosed with and treated for numerous chronic health conditions and was being monitored by facility medical staff. An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

He had been held at Wyatt since July 2. According to a statement from federal prosecutors on that date, he was arrested on drug charges.

Wyatt Warden Daniel Martin has personally reviewed all aspects of Delestre's access to medical care and determined that all protocols were followed.
