Man Hot-Wires Dump Truck to Take Vehicle Out for Joyride

Surveillance camera show a man stealing the truck from Modern Autobody in Brockton on Monday

Police in Massachusetts are searching for a man who they say hot-wired a dump truck and took it for a joyride.

Brockton police say the suspect stole a truck from Modern Autobody around 2:47 a.m. Monday.

"He cut his way through the fence at the very end," said Fran Fistori, owner of Modern Auto Body.

Fistori says his surveillance cameras first showed the man trying to steal the large front-end loader then backing over a fence surrounding the lot.

"Broke that window, tore it out, went in, tried to start it," said Fistori.

The suspect then moved onto an Army truck, before finally settling on the large dump truck.

"He got the white dump truck started, backed it through the fence, went on a joy ride," said Fistori, "(He) came back here and walked up the street like nothing was wrong."

The suspect returned to the business about 40 minutes later.

Fistori says the suspect, who was seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt, caused more than $10,000 worth of damage.

Fistori soon learned he wasn’t the only victim.

"He drove a front end loader, which was stolen, over to the front of a recycling place over here, tried to vandalize their trucks," he said.

Police said a few weeks ago Woodward’s Auto Shop discovered a tractor-trailer cab missing and their fence destroyed.

"They took it, smashed it through the fence and then the next morning the liquor up the street, Frannie’s Liquor Store, called us up and told us that the truck was there," said Woodward Auto Shop co-owner Scott Woodward.

Fistori has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. He said he’s already gotten a few leads on whom it may be.

Brockton police are investigating.
