A Massachusetts man could serve nearly two decades in prison after pleading guilty to his role in a deadly 2015 shooting.
The Bristol County District Attorney's Office announced Monday that 22-year-old Lorenze DaVeiga of Taunton pleaded guilty to manslaughter, two counts of assault and battery with a firearm and illegal firearm possession in connection to a shootout on June 27, 2015 that left 24-year-old Marques McCassie dead.
DaVeiga was sentenced to up to 18-and-a-half years in prison.
The DA's office said DaVeiga went to a cookout at McCassie's cousin's house on Weir Street, firing a shot at McCassie and hitting him in the side. He then allegedly shot McCassie's cousin in the knee.
DaVeiga was wrestled to the ground, according to prosecutors, but he fired another shot at McCassie and hit him in the thigh.
Prosecutors say McCassie fired back and hit DaVeiga at least four times.
An injured DaVeiga allegedly fled to Somerset Avenue, where a bystander helped. DaVeiga was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and survived after surgery.

McCassie died from his wounds at Morton Hospital in Taunton.
"This was another senseless act of violence that continues to plague our communities," DA Thomas Quinn III said in a statement. "There is no rational basis for this behavior, which ruins many lives."
