Thousands of Massachusetts residents are without power Friday as a powerful storm moves through New England, bringing heavy rain and wind.

Outages were anticipated due to strong winds that could knock down tree limbs and power lines.

The number of power outages had reached 15,000 as of 4 p.m. Friday. That number had dropped under 3,100 as of 11 p.m.

Flood warnings were in effect for parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and high wind warnings were in effect for coastal Maine. There was also a tornado warning issued for Nantucket that expired around 6:15 p.m. Friday.

Street flooding is already being reported in Billerica and Manchester, New Hampshire, among other places.

When the storm blew through Westwood, Massachusetts, Friday evening, it sent a tree crashing onto some power lines, leaving up to 25% of the town in the dark.

With power lines and trees down, Westwood police blocked the main road past the high school, and with no power, the Westwood High School football game scheduled for Friday night had to be postponed.

It was a busy night at Comella's, where some customers escaped the dark by coming in and others instead ordered delivery.

Down the street at Blue Orchid, there was no power and they were trying to make do cooking with gas -- open only for takeout. And with the credit card machine down, it was cash only.

Power lines sparked flames and smoke in Billerica, Mass., after a tree came down Friday along Albion Road and knocked out a utility line.

Crews were working to restore power into the night but it was slow going.

The National Weather Service said a two to four hour period of heavy rain, gusty winds and embedded thunderstorms could cause some flooding and damaging wind gusts.
