Voters in Massachusetts turned out in record numbers for Tuesday's 2018 midterm elections, according to Secretary of State William F. Galvin.
Galvin announced Friday that unofficial results reported by local election officials indicate that 2.7 million Bay State residents voted, exceeding Galvin's prediction of 2.4 million.
The number of ballots cast represents the highest turnout in a midterm election in Massachusetts in 24 years.
Galvin said the number of ballots will rise as local election officials count provisional ballots as well as military and overseas ballots mailed from outside of the United States.
Ballots mailed from overseas will be counted if they arrive by Nov. 16 and if they were postmarked by Election Day.
After local election officials certify their results the deadline of Nov. 21, results are then transmitted to the Governor and Governor's Council, who will meet to certify results Nov. 28.
