MassDOT Warns Drivers About Bridge Closures This Weekend

State officials are warning drivers about varying degrees of delays ahead of two bridges in Boston being closed this weekend.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced the closures will affect all non-emergency vehicles using the Longfellow Bridge and the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge over Commonwealth Avenue.

The Longfellow Bridge closure will only affect non-emergency vehicle traffic starting at 11 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, May 14. The MBTA will use shuttle buses to replace the Red Line trains during this period, and the bridge will still be open to emergency vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge closed to all traffic starting Thursday night, May 10, through 5 a.m., Tuesday, May 15, as crews fully replace the bridge.

MassDOT's highway administrator, Jonathan Gulliver, said there will be detour routes in place with signs for drivers.

"We appreciate the patience of travelers as essential projects are underway and we encourage members of the public to learn about these upcoming impacts and the respective detour routes, plan ahead and utilize the most appropriate route, time, and mode of travel in order to reach their destination in an efficient manner," Gulliver said in a statement.
