MBTA Officials Accept $1B Bid to Build Green Line Extension

MBTA officials have named the winning bid for the lead construction contract on the Green Line extension.

Officials with MassDOT and the MBTA confirm that Green Line Constructors was chosen Friday to design and build the nearly 5-mile project that will extend the Green Line through Somerville and Medford.

A formal vote, which is still needed, will happen on Nov. 20.

Green Line Constructors is a consortium of several engineering and construction firms. Officials said the winning bid was $1.08 billion, well below a $1.3 billion ceiling set by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

T officials streamlined the long-delayed project and asked for new bids after initial costs rose above $3 billion. The federal government has committed nearly $1 billion for the extension, part of a 1990 settlement that allowed the massive Big Dig highway project to go forward.

"The difficult decisions in 2015 and 2016 following the project's shutdown in 2015 have paved the way for us getting to this point," Green Line extension project manager John Dalton said. "All of the effort that has gotten us to this point is well worth it."

The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
