MBTA Operating on Reduced Schedule on All Lines Tuesday Due to Storm

The MBTA is operating on a reduced schedule on all lines for the duration of Tuesday's nor'easter.

The Red, Orange, Blue and Green lines are operating with reduced frequency similar to a Saturday schedule, meaning seven to 10 minutes between trains. The Wollaston Station bus shuttle that operates all day to and from North Quincy, Wollaston and Quincy Center due to Wollaston's closure is continuing to operate.

The Mattapan Trolley Line is being replaced with dedicated shuttle bus service for the entire day Tuesday.

Keolis said the MBTA Commuter Rail is operating on an "extremely reduced" schedule.

All ferry service has also been suspended for the entire day Tuesday due to weather conditions.

Regular weekday bus service is running on Tuesday, but some buses will most likely be operating on their designated snow routes.

Deputy General Manager Jeff Gonneville said Tuesday morning the biggest challenge with the storm was keeping the right of way clear on all the tracks.

"The 18 inches of snow along the right of way is a concern for us obviously," Gonneville said. "Part of the modified schedule allows us to bring out these pieces of equipment during the day today to run along the right of way to essentially clear our tracks."

Since 2015, Gonneville said the MBTA has a lot of new equipment in place to help clear tracks.

"We have a good fleet of snow fighting equipment from large jet turbines to blowers to blow the snow. We have large otters to push the snow or locomotives or other pieces of large equipment that is designed to run along our track and essentially move the snow, push snow out of the way," said Gonneville. "And those are all pieces of equipment that frankly we didn't have in our arsenal back in the winter of 2015."

Riders are urged to plan ahead and allow for additional travel time during their morning and evening commutes.
