In order to help boost ridership, the MBTA and Keolis announced Wednesday they are resuming the special all-weekend fare that they tried out last summer.
MBTA officials said the special $10 Commuter Rail weekend fare pilot will resume on Saturday, Jan. 5. The special fare is valid from the first train on Saturday to the last train on Sunday and can be used across all zones and all lines. The Cape Flyer is not included.
"Resuming this pilot allows our customers to continue taking advantage of Commuter Rail as a travel option on weekends, while we study the potential for making this program permanent," said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak.
Commuters can purchase the special all-weekend fare on the mTicket app, onboard trains (cash or credit card from conductors), and at ticket windows at North, South, and Back Bay stations.
MBTA officials said the reduced fare gives passengers a "convenient and affordable option to visit a number of great destinations across the greater Boston area."
The all-weekend fare pilot program was first launched in the summer of 2018 with the intent of increasing ridership and increasing revenue on weekends when trains have additional capacity.
According to the MBTA, 180,000 tickets were sold during the pilot six-month fare period — generating a 4.6 percent increase in weekend revenues compared to the same period in 2017.
