While families enjoyed barbeques and relaxation on Labor Day, two Democratic congressional nominees worked through one final push to reach Boston voters ahead of Tuesday’s Primary election.
Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley and incumbent Mike Capuano are racing to win the 7th Congressional District seat, a district that covers Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Randolph, Somerville, Cambridge and Milton.
Capuano, who has spent almost 20 years on Capitol Hill, is backed by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, while Pressley is supported by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey. Should Pressley win, she would become the first black woman from the state elected to Congress.
"The district has changed," Pressley said. "The needs of the district have changed and given what is happening in Washington, so has the job description."
Both candidates made an appearance at the Greater Boston Labor Council Annual Labor Day Breakfast on Monday. They then hit the streets to meet voters following the event.
"The Democrats understand that we have a common enemy with people who don’t share any of our values," Capuano said.
Pressley will vote in Dorchester while Capuano will vote in Somerville. The most recent polling last month showed Capuano up by 13 points.
The winner will face the lone Republican Rick Green, a businessman from Pepperell.
Polls open at 7 a.m. for voters and close at 8 p.m. For more information on where to vote, click here. To check your registration status, click here.
