24-Year-Old Swimmer Goes Missing in Chicopee River in Springfield

A woman reported her husband was swimming when he got tired and was swept away by a fast current

A 24-year-old swimmer went missing Sunday evening in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Police responded to a woman's 911 call just before 5:45 p.m. to the Indian Leap area of the Chicopee River for a report of a missing man.

The woman reported her husband was swimming when he got tired and was swept into the middle of the river by a fast current where he was last seen before going under.

The Springfield Police Department spent hours searching Sunday, but what began as a rescue has become a recovery mission for the man's body.

The search was suspended for the night late Sunday, and authorities say they will resume the search Monday morning.

Four divers were on scene Sunday, along with Springfield police and Massachusetts State Police.

The man has not been identified.
