Heavy Traffic Ahead of Mother’s Day Weekend

Transportation officials are warning of heavy volume on Friday

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation issued a warning to commuters this week to plan ahead and expect heavy delays on the Friday before Mother's Day, especially on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The heaviest traffic is expected Friday and Sunday afternoon through early evening, particularly on toll roads like Interstate 90 and approaches to Cape Cod. Drivers are encouraged to make travel plans accordingly and avoid peak traffic volumes between 1 and 7 p.m. on those days if possible.

The Massachusetts DOT said the Friday before Mother's Day is one of the busiest traffic days of the year on I-90. In 2013, Mother's Day ranked second only to the Friday before Columbus Day, with nearly 700,000 toll transactions.

"We encourage Mother's Day weekend travelers to check our traffic resources before they leave, allow extra time, drive safely, and enjoy their family time," MassDOT Acting Highway Administrator Thomas Tinlin said.

I-90 traffic is expected to be especially heavy at the Interstate 84 interchange at Exit 9 in Sturbridge and at the Interstate 495 interchange at Exit 11A.
