Mourners Attend Wake for Slain Maine Cpl. Eugene Cole

A public viewing for the Maine Sheriff's Deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty was held Sunday evening.

Sixty-one-year-old Cpl. Eugene Cole was killed April 25 in Norridgewock while working an early morning shift for the Somerset County Sheriff's Office.

John Williams, 29, of Madison, is being held without bail in connection to Cole's death after a four day manhunt.

According to WCSH-TV, Cole served in the U.S. Army before joining the sheriff's department. He also ran an electronics business and dabbled in music in his spare time.

Cole and his wife Sheryl had four children, one of whom is also a Somerset County deputy.

A private viewing service for close family and friends was held Saturday.

The public viewing service was held Sunday from 4 p.m. — 7 p.m. at the Skowhegan Armory, 11 North School St., Skowhegan.

Thousands of mourners, including officers from around the country, are expected at Cole's funeral on Monday. Due to the crowd size, the funeral is being held at noon at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

According to the Press Herald, an elite motorcycle unit from the New York City Police Department will lead the funeral procession from the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home in Skowhegan beginning at 9:30 a.m.
