Woman Escapes Fire by Jumping Out Window at Merrimac Apartment

A Massachusetts woman escaped a fire that destroyed her apartment building by jumping out the second-floor window in Merrimac Friday morning.

The fire broke out at the Greenleaf Park apartment complex on Greenleaf Drive at about 8:30 a.m. and quickly reached 3-alarms, according to the Merrimac Fire Department.

"I was yelling 'fire, fire, fire' and that's when we heard her, and we said, 'There's somebody in there," said neighbor Kim Deserres.

The woman, who has not been identified, was originally trapped inside the building, but jumped into the arms of a Merrimac police officer.

"We were just yelling at her to jump, jump, and she did," said neighbor Paige Quellette "She just jumped out and landed in the bushes and in their arms a little,"

The woman was taken to Anna Jaques Hospital for evaluation.

There were no other reports of injuries.

"It was a community effort by everybody to help this woman and and we're happy she got out," said neighbor Marilyn Judson.

Five people were displaced by the fire.

The four-unit building is considered to be a total loss, as high winds helped feed the flames. No other buildings were damaged.

The total damage is estimated at $1 million.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
