New England Lawmakers Blast Trump After News of Russian Indictments

New England's mostly Democratic Congressional delegation sounded off on President Donald Trump following the announcement Friday that 13 Russians had been indicted by the Justice Department for meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

"Hey President @realDonaldTrump, do you still think that whole Russia thing is a hoax?" Massachusetts Congressman Michael Capuano asked on Twitter.

"Here's a question for @realDonaldTrump: Is it still fake news when YOUR Justice Department is indicting 13 Russians for interfering in the 2016 election?" Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern added.

"Russia attacked our democracy. Period. We all need to ask: Why has our own Commander in Chief denied it for so long?" Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton said. "What is he afraid of? Does he owe Russia something?"

"Far from a 'witch hunt,' the Special Counsel is methodically revealing that Russian interference in our 2016 election was sophisticated & pervasive," Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy said. "Now the President & Congress need to actually ACT to protect our 2018 elections. No more heads in the sand."

"We now have proof that this was a well-funded, well-organized, well-executed Russian operation to interfere with our election and elect @realDonaldTrump," Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey said. "Every American should understand the magnitude of these charges, the President most of all. There can be no more denying. These Russian conspirators must be prosecuted and Robert Mueller's investigation must be protected."

"Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation continues to bear fruit. Indictment of Russians involved with the 2016 campaign hints at the extent of information operations intended to undermine our democracy," Rhode Island Congressman Jim Langevin said.

"Profoundly disturbing news on #Russia's interference in our democracy," Connecticut Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty said. "Raises significant questions that I fear are being lost in the discussion: what does it mean when it's easy for a foreign power - or anyone, for that matter - to manufacture public opinion online?"

"Russia clearly interfered in our elections and this indictment paints a very disturbing picture as to some of the methods the Kremlin used," New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said in a statement. "This indictment further underscores the need to protect Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation from political interference from the White House and partisan members of Congress."
