Sununu Wins NH Gov.'s Race; Pappas Wins 1st District Race

Democrat Annie Kuster won a 4th term Tuesday evening against her GOP challenger, state Rep. Steve Negron

New Hampshire's Republican governor won a second term Tuesday evening as voters in the Granite State's 1st Congressional District made history by electing the state's first ever openly gay congressman.

Chris Sununu defeated former Democratic state lawmaker Molly Kelly, who had sought to follow the footsteps of Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, both of whom became governor after stints in the state senate.

Meanwhile, Democrat Chris Pappas won against Republican nominee Eddie Edwards in the open race for the 1st Congressional District. Pappas' election makes him the first openly gay congressman to represent New Hampshire; however, had Edwards been elected, he would have been the state's first black member of Congress.

Democrat Annie Kuster won a fourth term in the 2nd Congressional District, defeating Republican state Rep. Steve Negron.

Secretary of State William Gardner predicted record midterm turnout of over 500,000 voters.

Some voters said they showed up because they were concerned about the state of the country's democracy. Others said they never miss an opportunity to vote, with one woman holding her 9-year-old daughter's hand in Concord and explaining, "This is what our forefathers fought for."

Voters statewide are also weighing in on two ballot questions that concern citizens' right to privacy from government and the right to sue government bodies.
