Newton Vigil Honors Victims of California Synagogue Shooting

A vigil Monday in Newton, Massachusetts, honored the victims of this weekend's synagogue shooting in Poway, California.

On the final day of Passover, during Shabbat services, gunfire broke out at a synagogue in Poway, California, just 20 miles north of San Diego.

The attack left 60-year-old Lori Gilbert-Kaye dead. Three others, including 57-year-old Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, 34-year-old Almog Peretz and 8-year-old Noya Dahan, were injured.

At Beth Menachem Chabad of Newton Monday night, leaders joined the Jewish community to pay their respects.

"I am so saddened to have to be back here to talk again about an episode that has taken place at a sacred space," Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.

The attack, on a holy Saturday, happened some six months after 11 people were shot and killed at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

John T. Earnest, 19, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder. His family condemned his alleged actions in a statement.
