Nonprofit Raising Money for MLK Memorial in Boston

Inspired by the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and the MLK memorial in the San Francisco Bay area, the nonprofit MLK Boston is working on a tribute to the civil rights icon.

“I want this memorial to make Dr. King real,” said Reverend Liz Walker, an organizer of MLK Boston.

Rev. Walker and entrepreneur Paul English are leading the nonprofit.

After a visit to the Bay Area memorial, English donated $1 million to the effort.

“We should have something like this in Boston, something magnificent!” English exclaimed.

The major questions now are: What should this memorial look like? Where should it be? MLK Boston is open to all ideas.

“I want Bostonians to be exposed to the depth and breadth of his work,” said English, “I also want people to face the reality of what it’s like to be a person of color in Boston.”

“I think it should be engaging, motivational, inspirational and I think it should be challenging,” Walker added.

A decision on design is expected by November 2018.
