Police Officer Hospitalized After Being Hit by Car in Jamaica Plain

Police say the officer was chasing a suspect when he was struck

A Boston Police officer is recovering after he was struck by a car Wednesday morning while chasing a suspect in the city's Jamaica Plain neighborhood.

The incident happened sometime around 10:30 a.m. in the area of 3084 Washington St., according to the Boston Police Department.

NBC10 Boston's SkyRanger footage showed the officer on a stretcher being taken into an ambulance.

Dewayne Cox said he was sitting a few feet away in his truck when the crash happened.

"We heard the big crash and I just looked in my rear view mirror. Seen him on the ground and called 911," recalled Cox. "He said his legs were hurting him and his back was hurting. He was just laying on the ground."

The officer was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Nearby surveillance cameras recorded the moments before the collision. Elvis Peguero, who owns the cameras, said he was asked by Boston Police not to release the video but described to NBC10 Boston what he saw.

"They talk to the guy and the guy, he's running. They try to take the guy," described Peguero who said the officer who was struck had been chasing a man who was arrested at the scene. "He's like a neighborhood officer. He's a friend of everybody. He cares about everybody. And we are really, really worried about him right now."

Police have not said why the officer was chasing the man. Neither the name of the man arrested nor the officer have been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
