2 drivers charged after overnight crash in Waltham brings down utility pole

Both drivers face negligent driving charges, and one was also charged with driving drunk

Two drivers have been charged after an overnight crash took down a utility pole in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Police said officers first spotted a white Volkswagen ATI and black BMW M340XI speeding down Crescent Street just before 1 a.m. Monday. Moments later, both vehicles crashed, causing damage to the properties and a utility pole.

Three people fled the scene of the crash. One passenger was found and treated for minor injuries, police said.

Officers also found one of the drivers, identified as an 18-year-old New Hampshire man. He was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of property damage, speeding, and possession of ammunition without an FID card. He was evaluated by EMTs and declined treatment.

The second driver, identified as a 19-year-old from Burlington, was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of property damage, and speeding.

Neither driver was publicly named.

Witnesses described hearing a scream after the crash.

Eversource was called in to make repairs to the utility pole.
