Man Fleeing Police Jumps Out Window Before Violent Encounter

The victim told police they were struck multiple times by Michael Perry, 31, of Malden

After a violent confrontation, police arrested a man accused of attacking a person with a frying pan and a ceramic vase early Thursday morning in Boston's South End.

When Marco Velez heard the commotion, he immediately grabbed his cell phone and looked out his hotel window. At the time, he had no way of knowing he would be watching a man jump out of a room at the Chandler Inn, onto an awning, and down to the street as police moved in to apprehend him.

As Velez started recording out of his seventh floor hotel room, he watched as another guest, three floors below him, started throwing furniture out the window.

"He is mad at the world, woke me up," Velez says in the video. "Got to love Boston, right?"

"We had a couple of guests that stopped getting along in the middle of the night," Clifford Long, the owner of Chandler Inn said. "They trashed our room. This room was looking pretty good yesterday."

Inside the third floor room, dried blood was smeared on the walls, the TV was ripped out of the wall and broken glass littered the carpet.

"It must have been an incredible fight, there is blood on the walls," Long said. "I take it a bit personally, it is like someone destroying your home."

Police say they responded around 2 a.m. when a man flagged down officers to say he had just been attacked inside a hotel room. According to police, the victim said he escaped from the room by climbing down the fire escape.

As officers went to the hotel to talk with the suspect, he could be seen throwing furniture and other items out the window. SWAT officers were called to the scene.

As officers moved in, the suspect, identified by police as 31-year-old Michael Perry of Malden, can be seen on video jumping out of the hotel window, onto an awning below. As two SWAT members try and grab him, he rolls off the awning, partially landing on a vehicle parked on the street.

In the video, several officers surround Perry. One officer can be seen punching Perry several times. According to the department, an officer eventually uses a taser, and Perry is arrested.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said Thursday night that the incident highlights the violent encounters his officers routinely face.

Several officers suffered minor injuries, Evans added. The victim and suspect were both hospitalized.

The victim's condition wasn't available Thursday evening.

Police say the suspect will be arraigned after he is released from the hospital. He faces several felony charges.
