Police: Man Flees Traffic Stop, Crashes Into Another Vehicle, Pole

A Massachusetts man crashed into another vehicle and a utility pole after he fled during a traffic stop in Dartmouth, according to state police.

Thirty-one-year-old Fall River resident Jovan Rivers is facing charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle; impeded operation of a motor vehicle; failure to stop for police; and refusing to identify himself.

Police say Rivers was pulled over Friday around 9 a.m. on Route 195 eastbound after he was observed wearing large headphones. He allegedly refused to provide license or registration, rolled up his window and sped away.

Officers eventually caught up to his vehicle and found he struck a second vehicle just south of the Reed Road intersection and then crashed into a utility pole.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 69-year-old Westport woman, was not injured and refused treatment.

Rivers’ vehicle caught fire during his arrest.

He refused medical treatment on the scene and was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for examination.

He will eventually be taken to New Bedford District Court for arraignment.

It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
