PD: Man Hits 4 Vehicles While Drunk, Tries to Flee Scene

A Massachusetts man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly crashed into four vehicles, including a bus, while drunk on Wednesday night.

Francis Caruso, 62, of Dennis, is facing charges of operating under the influence of liquor, operating a motor vehicle negligently so as to endanger and a marked lanes violation, according to Yarmouth police.

Officers responded to multiple 911 calls around 6:47 p.m. in the area of Route 28 and Bliscott Avenue in South Yarmouth for reports of multiple crashes where the driver, later identified as Caruso, allegedly tried to flee.

Police arrived on scene and saw a black pickup truck which had crashed into a sign at the corner of Seaview Avenue and Route 28. Bystanders pointed to the truck and told police it was the one involved in the crashes.

One witness told police he was driving behind Caruso and saw him crash into several vehicles before hitting the sign. Other witnesses said he tried to drive away, but couldn’t because of the damage to the truck.

Officers found Caruso in the truck, which was still running, and said he was conscious and alert. Caruso told police he had three Sierra Nevada beers hours earlier. Police said his eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred.

Caruso was placed under arrest and taken to the Yarmouth Police Department, where police said he continued to be combative. Officers had to place him in handcuffs again during the booking process while they waited for him to calm down.

Two people were taken to Cape Cod Hospital following the crashes with unspecified injuries. The bus that Caruso allegedly hit was a Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Bus with passengers on board.

Caruso was held overnight and was taken to Barnstable District Court Thursday morning for arraignment.

It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
