The child was shot in the foot and the 35-year-old man suffered critical injuries

Two people, including a child, were shot Thursday night in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood amid the city's Fourth of July celebrations.

Boston Police Chief William Gross said an 8-year-old girl was shot in the foot and a 35-year-old man was critically injured in the incident, which took place at a park just before 11 p.m.

"As far as we can tell, everybody was in the Mary Hannon Park enjoying the Fourth of July, as they should be” at the time of the incident, Gross said.

The child's injury is non-life threatening, according to Gross.

Details on what led up to the incident were not immediately clear. The shooting is under investigation.
