A man and woman were taken into custody Thursday afternoon near Harvard University after a brief shelter in place prompted by a report of a man with a gun.

The initial report was tweeted out by Harvard University around 3:40 p.m., saying police were responding to a report of a male with a gun in the area of the Smith Campus Center on Massachusetts Avenue.

A man had reportedly lifted his shirt and showed a gun — located in his waistband — after a verbal altercation with a group of men, Cambridge police said.

Harvard students and faculty were urged to shelter in place.

Cambridge police officers searched the area and were able to find the man matching the suspect description in Central Square, police said. The man, identified as Chayanne Velazquez, 28, Dorchester, was taken into custody.

A woman with Velazquez, identified by police as Lynn resident Stephanie Ford, 25, was also taken into custody after police allegedly located a gun inside her backpack.

Harvard's shelter in place was lifted within minutes.

Velazquez is facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a firearm without a license. Ford is facing charges of carrying a loaded firearm without a license. It's unclear when they will be arraigned on the charges.
