Poll: Voters Largely Undecided in Crowded MA-3 Race

A random survey of voters in Massachusetts' third congressional district indicates there aren't a lot of people paying attention to the upcoming race — at least not yet.

The lack of interest cannot be linked to a shortage of choices. There are 13 candidates running in the Democratic primary — NBC10 Boston couldn't even find a picture for one of them — though many are not familiar with any.

The first poll of this congressional race, released by UMass, shows Rufus Gifford in the lead with 11 percent. Barbara L'Italien is polling at 7 percent, with Lori Trahan at 5 percent. Dan Koh and Juana Matias tied for fourth with 4 percent.

The key finding, though, shows a whopping 59 percent of likely Democratic primary voters are undecided.

Joshua Dyck with the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion was surprised the relative unknown Gifford came in first.

"It is early," Dyck said. "Any of these candidates really could vault themselves to the top."
