Beating Trump ‘Not Enough’ to Battle Climate Change, Dem Hopeful Says

Presidential hopeful Michael Bennet said Friday that Democrats must fundamentally change how Washington operates if they want to implement lasting action on climate change.

Speaking at a Politics and Eggs event in Manchester, New Hampshire, the Democratic senator from Colorado said it would take more than winning the election in 2020 to make lasting change.

"If you care about climate change... it's not enough to beat Trump. We have to fix the broken politics in Washington.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell "doesn't have to fix it," he added. "The Freedom Caucus doesn't have to fix it. They're breaking it."

Bennet, who has served in the U.S. Senate since 2009, said short-term measures would not work.

"If you want to solve climate change you can't accept a world.... where we put in our proposals and they last for two years and the other side rips it to shreds," Bennet said at the event, which took place at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics.
