Principal of ‘Targeted' Explosion in Blackstone Overwhelmed by Support

The Massachusetts principal who police say may have been the victim of a "targeted" incident when a homemade explosive device resembling a pipe bomb damaged his vehicle is speaking out about his experience.

Principal Lucas Giguere sent an email to the community at Bellingham High School to thank them for their support after the device exploded outside his Lakeshore Drive home on Thursday evening.

"I have been overwhelmed by the sense of compassion, kindness, and community during this time," read the email. "I consider myself to be private by nature and am typically not comfortable with such public attention. However, I truly appreciate your positive thoughts and kind words throughout the last four days."

Police had responded to Giguere's residence after he called to report hearing loud bang that shook his home. He then noticed extensive damage to his Jeep Wrangler.

A preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle had been damaged by an explosive device that resembled a pipe bomb.

Further investigation by local, state and federal authorities indicated that Giguere was targeted and the incident was not random. Police determined that the public was not in any danger.

No injuries were reported.

Giguere said he remains committed to the students, staff, and families of Bellingham High and he continues to be moved by their professionalism throughout this experience.

"Because our priority is teaching and learning, our collective plan is to show up, work hard, and stay academically focused on the positive experiences taking place within the walls of BHS. Feeling a sense of normalcy and safety is paramount for our students and we intend to continue fostering such an atmosphere for our school community throughout the coming days and weeks," said Giguere.
