Proposed ‘Straight Pride Parade' in Boston Widely Skewered

It's getting national attention, but very few people are taking the notion of a "Straight Pride Parade" in Boston seriously.

"The irony is, a good half of our participants and marchers are our straight allies," said Linda DeMarco, president of Boston Pride, which organizes the city's annual LGBTQ parade.

Another group calling itself Super Happy Fun America is now trying to put together a Straight Pride Parade for this summer.

The idea has been skewered nationally by people like Stephen Colbert of The Late Show. The 90’s pop band Smash Mouth was more direct, tweeting, "Straight Pride Parade!?! [Expletive] Off."

"There's really nothing we can do to stop it. I don't really think anyone is going to come to watch it," said Mayor Marty Walsh.

Boston has previously rejected efforts by Super Happy Fun America to fly a flag, which the group says represents the straight community, at City Hall.

"The day will come when straights will finally be included as equals among all of the other orientations," President John Hugo said on the group's website.

The president of the committee that's been hosting the Boston Pride Parade for decades says this new group is entitled to do its thing.

"If they feel they need do that, all the power to them," said DeMarco.

The city has still not approved the straight parade. NBC10 Boston tried to reach the group a couple of times but did not hear back.
