Rain Heading to Southern New England

Dry air has stood its ground in Eastern New England Friday, allowing for plentiful sunshine ahead of increasing clouds from a disturbance that will deliver substantial rain to the Mid-Atlantic region, but a glancing shot of only some showers to Southern New England.

As clouds thicken ahead of the approaching disturbance Friday afternoon and evening, temperatures will rise into the 40s for most, with melting even reaching Northern New England both Friday and Saturday.

Though showers will remain limited to Southern New England – mostly south of the Mass. Pike – overnight Friday night into early Saturday morning, some light snow from a separate disturbance will fall in the Crown of Maine where 1 to 3 inches are expected by Saturday morning.

Otherwise, dry air takes a stand Saturday, shoving showers as far south as New Jersey by Saturday afternoon, ensuring New England stays mostly dry until that moisture returns north later Sunday, from south to north, midday to evening, respectively.

The complication Sunday night will be just enough cool air for rain to change to snow through the interior, and perhaps all the way to the Boston Metro. If enough moisture moves north, snow accumulation of a couple inches may greet Monday morning commuters for a large chunk of New England with some icing possible for interior Connecticut.

Regardless, the storm center producing any rain and snow into Monday morning will depart by midday, leaving dry and cool air for the midweek until another possible storm Friday. The weekend leading up to Christmas looks good for now in our exclusive Early Warning Weather 10-day forecast.
