Secretary of State William Gardner expects about 180,000 ballots to be cast in New Hampshire's state primary.
Voters are nominating candidates for governor and both U.S. House seats, as well as state legislative races on Tuesday. Gardner expects the number of ballots cast to be equally split among Democrats and Republicans.
At 90,000, that would be a record for Democrats for turnout in a midterm primary election. The previous record was about 70,000 Democratic ballots in 2002. Republicans also set a record that year, with about 156,000 ballots.
As of Thursday, there were just over 957,000 registered voters. Gardner's prediction would amount to about 19 percent turnout, though new voters also can register at the polls. Voters unaffiliated with a party can vote in either primary.
