The eight-game winning streak for the Boston Red Sox game to a merciful end on the road on Saturday night.
For the first time since 1993, the Red Sox were on the wrong end of a no-hitter. Sean Manaea of the Oakland Athletics held Boston without a hit in a 3-0 win for the A's, dropping the Red Sox' record to 17-3 on the season. Oakland improved to 10-11.
Boston had only two base runners against Manaea, who struck out 10 batters. He needed 108 pitches to complete the gem, dropping his ERA to 1.23 in the process.
Manaea, 26, got Blake Swihart to ground out and Mookie Betts to fly out to begin the top of the ninth inning before walking Andrew Benintendi. Hanley Ramirez hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Manaea has local ties to New England, having played in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2012.
The Red Sox play the A's again on Sunday to complete their three-game series before continuing on to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays for a three-game set beginning on Tuesday.
