RI Man Gets Probation in Case Tied to Meningitis Outbreak

A former employee of a Massachusetts pharmacy responsible for a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak in 2012 has been sentenced to two years of probation for working as an unlicensed pharmacy technician.

Scott Connolly of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, was sentenced Wednesday.

Federal prosecutors say Connolly was unlicensed because of a past disciplinary action when he was hired at the New England Compounding Center in Framingham where he worked from 2010 to 2012.

Officials say Connolly produced thousands of prescription solutions by using a supervising pharmacist's log-in information so his name wouldn't appear on paperwork as he filled orders.

Connolly made a solution used in heart surgeries and not the contaminated steroid injections responsible for the outbreak. Officials say supervising pharmacists knew Connolly was unlicensed.

He was indicted with 13 others and pleaded guilty to mail fraud.
