RI City Proposes Allowing Medical Marijuana Farms

Officials in a Rhode Island city have introduced a measure to allow the large scale indoor cultivation of medical marijuana.

The Woonsocket Call reports Woonsocket City Council this month proposed repealing part of the Zoning Ordinance that bans indoor pot farms.

The measure has several restrictions on where the facilities could be located, requires the facilities to have ventilation systems and says the structures must be secure.

The measure also specifies the facilities may only be used for medical marijuana.

City Council President Dan Gendron says the city would not see a "huge financial windfall" if the measure passes. The city would only be able to tax equipment used to grow marijuana.

The council will vote on the measure after a public hearing and a review by the Planning Board.
