An early morning crash on Interstate 93 in Medford, Massachusetts temporarily caused the southbound side of the highway to be completely shut down before later reopening.
Just a single lane was open on the northbound side between exits 23 and 24, according to Massachusetts State Police, after a rollover crash resulted in what they called life-threatening injuries to the driver, a 41-year-old man from Rockland.
State police said that the crash occurred around 3:20 a.m. north of Exit 24.
State police said the highway was shut down in part so that a medical helicopter could land near the crash site. But the victim was ultimately transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital after he was freed from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

The crash caused major delays during the morning commute. the scene was cleared and all lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m.
High speed is being examined as a possible contributing factor to the crash, state police said.
