Lane Closures Coming to Sagamore Bridge Starting Wednesday

It's not yet summer, but motorists are already being warned about possible traffic headaches on Cape Cod.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reducing the Sagamore Bridge to one lane in each direction for repairs starting Wednesday. The lane closures were originally set to begin today but were pushed back due to inclement weather. Off-road work is still set to begin on Monday.

The Sagamore Bridge, which opened in 1935, carries Route 6 across the Cape Cod Canal.

The $1.7 million project includes the replacement of bridge joints on the roadway, repair of corroded steel and concrete supports at the affected joints, patching of damaged pavement surfaces, and replacement of deteriorated waterproof membranes along the curbs.

The work is expected to last until late May, right before the Memorial Day weekend.

Similar work on the Bourne Bridge is scheduled for September.

The Army Corps of Engineers maintains and operates both spans.
