Another Mass. Town Considers Plastic Bag Ban

Another Massachusetts town is considering a ban on single-use plastic shopping bags.

Seekonk residents at Monday's annual town meeting are being asked to back a ban of retail use of plastic bags.

The Sun Chronicle reports that the bag restrictions, proposed by a citizen petition, would ban the thin plastic check-out bags at stores, except for produce, meat and other wet items.

The measure would begin being phased in Jan. 1, and mean stores would have to either use paper bags or reusable cloth bags.

Dozens of other communities in Massachusetts have already implemented or are considering such bans. A statewide plastic bag ban is being considered by state lawmakers.
